In the late nineteenth century, the International Workers of the World, (IWW, or 'Wobblies' went on strike for a Worker's Holiday. They went on strike on May 1. The powers that be relented and gave the workers the holiday they wanted, but they were given the first Monday in September. Why? Because that day has no meaning for the Labor Movement. They were afraid that workers would go on strike every May 1 for something else. May 1 went on to become May Day or International Worker's Day in left leaning countries, whereas May 1 is Law Day in the US, reminding you to obey the Law (ie your masters),

The author notes that bosses don't want labor to be united. It has worked so far - in the US, few people identify themselves as Labor or Proletariat. Instead bosses encourage conflict within the Labor Movement, such as men vs. women, blacks vs whites and unions vs. non-union. Imagine what would happen if everyone banded together for the benefit of all workers or all employees?

Republicans chide Democrats for bringing up 'class warfare' at election time. But that is exactly what Republicans are doing - declaring all out war against the middle and lower classes. Look wher the bulk of the tax cuts went to millionaires and now they want to lower tax rates on 'unearned' income, such as 'investments' but keeping the tax structure essentially the same for 'earned' income from sweat equity such as wages.

If you read the chapter I linked to...consider the following comment. We are divided.  How many ways are we divided?  red and blue...pro life v pro choice...selft and right...and so on.  More importantly that it does not matter to the elected officials which side wins the arguments...as long as they can make some money out of representing us.  This party system needs to disappear.  Otherwise it will divide and conquer the very human beings who make this world work.
